University don unveils book on status and rights of women in Islam.

By NJ Correspondent:

Medical Doctor and academician Dr. Daud Abdi Ismail has unveiled a book that details the rights of women in Islam.

The book titled ‘The rights and status of women in Islam’ was launched on Friday at Al Imra International University in Mogadishu where the author currently plies his trade as a lecturer.

Top university management, academicians, students and members of the public graced the event.

Speaking when he addressed participants during the launch, Dr. Daud who has several other titles to his name said he started writing the book after he arrived in Mogadishu at the height of debates on the rights of women.

“When I have seen all the discussions surrounding rights of women, the thought of shedding more light on this immediately struck me. We are Muslims and our religion has accorded Women more rights than those purporting to fight for this cause” said Dr. Daud pointing out examples from the Quran and the traditions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The book’s launch was timely coming at a time when Somalia has just concluded parliamentary elections where women struggled to take up their allocated 30% parliamentary seats as their men colleagues elbowed them out in some instances resulting in cancellation of results.
