Two people passed away in Garissa yesterday after an exercise to unblock a sewer went terribly wrong. The two were employees of the Garissa Water and Sewerage Company (GAWASCO) who slipped into the manhole. They were among the team working on the fetid 15-meter-sewage blocked by garbage, when one of them slipped when trying to climb up a ladder.
Garissa County Police Commander David Kirina confirmed the unfortunate incident saying that one of the deceased tried to save his colleague only for both of them to be weighed down by the running sewerage water. He advised the company workers to be extra careful in their activities.
“One of the victims had managed to unblock the sewer line and was on his way out; he was swept away by sewer water. His colleague tried to pull him out but was overwhelmed and both drowned in the manhole,” said Kirina.
It took three hours for residents, Garissa fire brigade and the Kenya Red Cross Society to retrieve the bodies from the manhole.
County CEC in-charge of Water Issa Dubow described the incident as “unfortunate and regrettable”, adding that the company will foot all the interment expenses.
The bodies of the deceased, who are said to be from the neighboring Mwingi Sub-county, were moved to Garissa Referral Hospital.
