Fear has gripped Kenya’s Elwak town in Mandera County after Somalia based Al Shabaab militants took over neighboring Elwak Somalia on Friday afternoon after a fierce gun fight.
Reports indicate Somali National Army under whose custody the captured town was, fled to the Kenyan side creating fear of militant pursuit among local residents.
There was limited activity on the Kenyan side Friday as residents remained indoors with some reporteddly fleeing to nearby locations.
Al Shabaab has been carrying out occasional raids in the town since they lost its control to the Somali National Army but were always repulsed.
Kenyan forces are on high alert given the proximity of the town to the Kenyan side.
