14 people were killed while 10 others wounded after suspected Al-shabaab militants attacked Mandera’s animal market area late last night.

Confirming the incident, North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamud Saleh said that 11 people died on the spot while three others succumbed to their injuries as they underwent treatment at Mandera County referral hospital.

“Our security officers have done a commendable job by rescuing 136 people from the hands of the bloodthirsty terror gangs. It is painful to us to lose a single life to criminals, but the number of the dead could have been bigger were it not for the quick response by our security officers”, He said.

The attackers reportedly hurled explosives and sprayed their victims with bullets in the estate housing mainly quarry workers who were driven out of the Koromey quarry site by the government last year over their security concerns following the killing of their colleagues.

Mandera governor Ali Roba termed the attack a cowardly act and sent his condolences to those who lost their loved ones.

“Once again, the enemies of Mandera have struck in the most unlikely place; attacking innocent people in their homes. I condemn in the strongest terms possible the killing of 14 innocent lives in Mandera’s animal market area last night” he said in a statement.
