Somalia: Ramadan crescent sighting confirmed

Residents of several towns in Somalia have confirmed seeing the Ramadan moon crescent confirming start of the holy month on Monday, June 6, 2016.

Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimu said he spoke to several people who confirmed the sighting to him.

“I have just spoken to Maalim Mohamed Hassan Suleiman, a Quranic school teacher in Warmahan town of Lower Shabelle region who is among those who sighted the moon. Two other people in the same locality have also confirmed seeing the crescent” posted Moalimu on his Facebook page.

Moalimu however said the Somalia’s Ministry of religion was yet to make an official announcement but added they were waiting for the same.


The ministry has since announced Ramadan will begin tomorrow, Sunday – June 6. 2016.
