Former BBC Somali radio presenter Ahmed Hassan Awke is dead. A sister to the late veteran journalist Anab Hassan Awke confirmed his death which occurred last night in Jigjiga after a short illness.
The renowned journalist was one of the best voices in the Somali broadcast media and is remembered for his sense of humour and incredible journalistic talent.
He started his decorated career in 1972 at the State broadcaster Radio Mogadishu as well as the National TV and later became spokesman of the late Somali President Siad Barre serving in the position until collapse of the central government in the early nineties.
Awke joined the BBC Somali service in 1996 where he is credited with establishing it as the dominant force in the Somali broadcast industry, his distinct voice and eloquence mesmerizing listeners.
He also worked in several other media houses such as the VOA, Universal TV, Horn cable TV, Somaliland National TV among others.
His body is expected to be flown to his home town of Hargeisa where he will be buried.
