A police officer was today killed in Dagahley refugee camp by suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen who also injured his colleague.

The gunmen allegedly trailed the officers before firing at them from close range killing one of them on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Criminal Investigation Department’s head of North Eastern region Mr. Musa Yego said that of the two officers, one was from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) while the other is from the General Duties (GD) section.

“Assailants we suspect to be Al-Shabaab adherents attacked two of our officers at about 3.30pm today (Saturday) at Daghley killing one instantly and seriously injuring his colleague,” he said

The injured officer was rushed to Dadaab district hospital and is scheduled to be transferred to Garissa County referral hospital.

Dagahley refugee camp is part of the larger Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County. Attacks targeting humanitarian agencies, security personnel and officials of the refugee community have been on the rise since Kenya launched its military offensive against Al-Shabaab in 2011.

The latest attack comes barely a week after the militia killed 28 Kenyans in Mandera last weekend.
