By Hussein Farah

A Kenya Police reservist was killed and the local branch of Equity bank partly destroyed in a dawn attack by Al Shabaab in Mandera town.

The slain officer was identified as Abdirahman Mohamud and had responded to movements near the bank when he was shot by the terrorists, police said.

Mandera County commission Fredrick Shisia said the militants were targeting a guest house which they thought was hosting non locals.

“We believe the assailants were targeting Jabane guesthouse which they thought could be accommodating some non-local guests, but there were none during the attack,” He said.

Governor Ali Roba however said there were 8 non local guests at the premises during attack but none was injured or killed.

Roba sent his condolences to the family and friends of the dead officer.

The hotel and the adjacent Equity bank branch were partly destroyed.

The gang of about eight men had planted Improvised Explosive Devices and engaged security agents in shootout before escaping.

It is not clear whether the deputy governor was in his house at the time of the incident.

The attack comes in the wake of an extended curfew in Mandera town and its environs.
