The National Supper Alliance (NASA) has declared ODM leader Raila Odinga as the Alliance flag bearer, Kalonzo Musyoka as the deputy President.
The declaration was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of supporters at the historic Uhuru Park in Nairobi on Thursday by ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi.
The Alliance brings together Raila (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (Amani), Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya), and Isaac Ruto (CCM).
The five pentagon agreed to share positions as follows, Raila Odinga (Presidential candidate), Kalonzo Musyoka (Deputy President), Musalia Mudavadi (Premier Cabinet Secretary), Issac Ruto (Deputy Premier CS in-charge of the State Department of Devolution and Planning) and Moses Wetang’ula (Deputy Premier CS in-charge of Public Service).
The Co-principals have been under pressure to name their preferred presidential candidate before CMM party leader Issac Ruto joined the Alliance last week.
Raila who is aged 72, will battle it out with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee Party in August, 2017 polls.
Raila contested for the presidency in 1997, 2007 and in 2013 but lost.
Despite his failed bids to win the presidency, Raila remains a towering figure in Kenyan politics; his name and influence in the Kenyan political scene remains formidable.
He has also elicited passionate dislike and enmity in some quarters, including from leading figures in the ruling administration, past and present.
In 2007, Raila was the opposition candidate for presidential elections running against former President Mwai Kibaki.
The election marred a violence leading to the death of over 1,300 people and displacement of more than 650,000 Kenyans.
To end the post-election violence, a grand coalition government was agreement was reached with the intervention of international communities.
Thus, this led Raila to serve as Kenyan’s Prime Minister under a power sharing deal from 2008-2012 with former President Mwai Kibaki during the formation of a national unity coalition government.
