More than 20 people including two MPs are feared dead after heavy blast that shook Mogadishu was on Wednesday afternoon targeted at Hotel Ambassador.
Reports indicate Federal MPs Abdullahi Jama alis Kabaweyne and his colleague Mohamed Mohamud Gure were in the same room. It is believed gunmen who stormed the hotel after a suicide bomber drove a vehicle laden with explosives into the premises killed many of the victims by shooting at them from close range.
Somali special forces however gained entry into hotel and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
More than 60 people including MPs and government officials sustained injuries in the deadly attack.
Al-shabaab has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mogadishu has enjoyed relative peace the past few weeks with no major incidents reported.
The incident comes days before Turkish President Tayyep Erdogan arrives in the war-torn country on Friday to officially open his country’s embassy in Mogadishu.
