Relatives prepare the body of Fatuma for burial at the County hospital

Maternal deaths continue to strike in Mandera County after one more mother lost her life on Monday morning at the County referral hospital.

Fatuma Edo is however survived by her still born baby among her other children.

National statistics show the North Eastern Counties of Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa have the highest maternal mortality rate in Kenya with Mandera leading the pack.

Out of the 3,795 pregnant women in the County in the last year, 2,136 died as a result of birth complications.

The incident happens at a time when the County governor and a delegation he was heading were in the US to attend a conference on Cyber Security.

A section of local residents condemned the trip which sources say will gobble around 23m of county finances in allowances and travel cost payable to the officers.

In yet another grim statistics released by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), an estimated 80,000 families are facing starvation as a result of persistent droughts in the border County.
