By NJ Correspondent:
Members of the Massare community have endorsed the incumbent Wajir East Member of Parliament Abass Sheikh Mohamed for a second term.
Youth and elders from the community led by Ugas Abdullahi Madey organized a four day meeting in Wajir this week to deliberate on how to front a single candidate just like they did in 2013.
Abass was challenged for his clan’s nod by businessmen Dr. Ali Mohamud and Noor Abdirashid who garnered 45 votes and 2 votes respectively to Abass Sheikh’s 75 after delegates drawn from the community’s four sub-clans voted on Sunday.
Most of the incumbent’s votes came from the community’s old guard after his popularity among the youth dropped to an all-time low.
The youth were however convince to bury their differences with the MP to allow community front a single candidate.
Abass Sheikh popularly known as Abass KK will now square it off with Rashid Kassim Amin who was equally endorsed by his Fai clan on July 28, 2016 among other candidates.
The Massare community will now embark on efforts to woo other communities to vote for Abass Sheikh who was the only MP elected on the ruling Jubilee coalition ticket during the 2013 polls.
Sheikh was recently named a Jubilee point man in North Eastern by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto in a team led by Majority leader and Garissa township MP Aden Duale.
On the other side, the Fai clan is currently holed up in meetings after Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Mohamed broke ranks with the clan elders’ verdict that gave its nod to Ugas Sheikh.
Word was doing round this week in Wajir that Ugas will be dropped in favor of Ambassador Mohamed and the former will be asked to contest for the position of Wajir East MP.
Ugas however refuted the claims saying the July 28 verdict still stands.
He was speaking to the press in Wajir on Monday.
