Women in Mandera County have been asked to seek more political representation ahead of the 2017 elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nep journal, Mandera County Assembly member for the youth Jamaldin Adan said top seats such as Gubernatorial, Senatorial and Member of Parliament positions were not a preserve for men and urged women to compete for these top political seats as they can make better leaders.

“I know too well that Mandera County women are capable of doing what men can do and they should not shy from vying for political positions because they are public offices which are not preserved for men only” said Jamaldin.

Jamaldin believes women will immensely contribute to the County’s development agenda given the chance and urged local electorates  to vote in more women in the coming elections.

“For better governance and prosperity, I hereby challenge women in Mandera County to rise up and contest for public offices. I feel that when it comes to corruption and misappropriation of public funds in Mandera County, women are not corrupt and can be trusted with public funds” said the outspoken MCA.

Only the County MP slot which is constitutionally reserved for women is currently occupied by a woman in Mandera out of the nearly 40 elective positions in the County.
