Man stabbed over elections in Garissa

A man is fighting for his life at Masalani hospital after he was stabbed at Gababa polling station in Garissa County during the Masalani Ward by-election.

The man said he had an argument with another someone over the election process whilst at the polling station. “After [the] confrontation the man drew a dagger which he used to stab me in the stomach,” said the 65-year-old man.

The medics at the hospital said the man was gravely injured below the stomach and that he will be referred to Garissa Hospital for surgery and specialized treatment.Ironically the suspect was also being treated at a room adjacent to where the victim was since he was also wounded during the argument. He was under police watch.

Talking at Masalani Primary School polling station in Ijara Constituency, Returning Officer Farah Abdi Ibrahim confirmed that the unpleasant incident happened in the environs of the polling centre. Nevertheless, he said this is a criminal case and that the IEBC has left the police to carry out their investigations and take legal action on the culprit implicated.

“We have heard the untoward incident that one person was wounded but we have spoken to the police who are handling it because it is a criminal matter,” said Mr. Ibrahim. At the same time, the returning officer said all polling stations opened on time with no glitches reported.

The by-election has engrossed a lot of attention owing to clan politics in the area. The election could not be held during the August 8 General Elections as it was postponed after the death of Ibrahim Abdullahi in a road crash 33 days to elections.

His younger brother Mr. Suleiman Abdullahi Muktar is now facing off with the outgoing MCA Abubakar Mohamed. The ward election is seen as political contest between the present Ijara MP Sophia Abdinoor and her recurrent political adversary Ahmed Ibrahim Abass who was elected the Garissa County Assembly Speaker.

While Ms Sophia has given full support to Mr. Suleiman Abdullahi with ferocious campaigns, Mr Abass has thrown his weight behind former Garissa County Deputy Speaker Abubakar Mohamed shide.
