Musician Keinan Abdi Warsame better known by his stage name K’naan is among the millions of Muslims undertaking this year’s Muslim pilgrimage – Hajj.
The Somali – Canadian rapper posted pictures of him and his mother at holy sites in Madina, Saudi Arabia.
“Standing before Al-Masjid Al-Nabawi, with the prophet Mohamed’s (pbuh) house and burial site behind me, Medina is a living and breathing history, one of the most enchanting cities on the planet. Praying here with my beautiful mother and sister – this is a childhood dream come true” said K’naan who rose to prominence with the success of his single “Wavin’ Flag”, which was chosen as Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Performing Hajj, is the fifth pillar of Islam and the most significant manifestation of Islamic faith and unity. Undertaking the Hajj at least once is a duty for Muslims who are physically and financially able to make the journey to Makkah.
The emphasis on financial ability is meant to ensure that a Muslim takes care of his family first. The requirement that a Muslim be healthy and physically capable of undertaking the pilgrimage is intended to exempt those who cannot endure the rigors of extended travel.
The pilgrimage is the religious high point of a Muslim’s life and an event that every Muslim dreams of undertaking. Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage, can be undertaken at any time of the year; Hajj, however, is performed during a five-day period from the ninth through the thirteenth of Dhu Al-Hijjah, the twelfth month of the Muslim lunar calendar.
K’naan was born in 1978 in Mogadishu City in the southeastern Banaadir province of Somalia
His family was from an artistic background. His grandfather was a famous poet, and his aunt Magool was a renowned singer. His name, Keynaan means “traveller” in the Somali language.
His fans took to social media to congratulate him and this is what they said:
