Food aid distribution in Malkamari by KRCS,

The Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with Turkish Embassy have distributed relief foods to more than 9100 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Malkamari town of Banisa Sub-county.

The team led by KRCS Manager Mandera Branch Hassan Sharif distributed rice, Cooking oil among others.

Sharif, however, said the distributed food would serve for one month and promised food vouchers for three months, but he didn’t say the amount each beneficiary would receive.

In 2014 inter-clan clashes between the Dagodia and Garre communities led to the displacement of more than 9000 families in Malkamari among other areas in the county.

Kenya Red Cross have early this month initiated a drought mitigation program targeted to support over 3800 drought-affected families in Wajir County.

The program set each family to receive Kshs 3,000 monthly for a four-month period through mobile money transfer service M-Pesa.

Families prefer food vouchers more than food aid as the money would enable them to buy basic needs according to families’ priorities.
