Mr Boinett is accompanied by the General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant Joel Kitili, senior Administration Police officers and bomb experts.

The team left Nairobi at around 7.20am.

Another police aircraft was also dispatched at around 6.30am to airlift the injured and the bodies to Nairobi. They are expected in Nairobi at around 2pm.

Immediately after the attack, the gunmen also attacked two vehicles transporting miraa from Wajir to Mandera at the same spot.
