International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) officials are said to be against plans by the Somali government to transfer the Somali airspace center to Mogadishu.
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), have in the past been in a dispute over the transfer of Somalia’s airspace.The Somali airspace is currently controlled from Nairobi.
Somali Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority (SCAMA) said all the plans have been put in place but the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) are sabotaging the plans.
Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, the head of ICAO is against the transfer, upon the preparation by the Somali government to host the Somali airspace center Dr. Aliu said “I can confirm that the Somali airspace cannot be transferred,” Dr. Aliu told HOL, “I have sent a letter explaining the situation surrounding the Somali airspace to the Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and he has been made aware that control (of the airspace) cannot be transferred.
On March three containers comprising of equipment worth millions of US dollars en route to Nairobi were accidentally sent to Mogadishu. The FGS refused to hand-over this equipment.
Somalis across the world have turned to twitter to protest the move, the hashtag #ReclaimSomAirSpace was trending on Monday afternoon.
