Hudreds receive free medical checkups and treatment in Garissa medical camp

More than 800 people in Garissa Township today benefited from a free medical camp organized in the area by Mirror of the youth organization, a community based organization in Garissa.

Speaking to Nepjournal on phone, Deputy Director of the CBO Mr. Zubeir Kassim said locals received free services such as nutritional screening, laboratory services, gynecology, paediatrics, Dental, ENT and VCT among other services.

He said the voluntary exercise which was held at Tetu Primary School brought together medical doctors and other health practitioners from all the health institutions in the county.

“I would like to thank all those who in one way or the other made this event a success. This event is part of the many voluntary exercises initiated by this CBO (Mirror of The Youth) whose membership is largely current and former students from the County” said Kassim.

Kassim added a similar exercise is scheduled to be held in Habaswein on Monday and will be attended by most of the volunteers who participated in today’s event.

Majority leader Aden Duale who is also the area MP and was also present at the function thanked all the organizers, medical team and the head teacher of Tetu Primary School for the selfless service to the community.

He assured the team of the government’s support saying affordable and accessible health care was one of the key pillars of the Jubilee administration in its manifesto.

The function was also supported by the Zawadi healthcare, Al-Ihsan peace and development organization, Directorate of Urban planning of Garissa County, the Kenya Red Cross, SIMAHO, Ministry of health – Garissa, Utawala dispensary, Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals.

Mirror of the youth organization is a Garissa based CBO that has an active membership of 47 who contribute monthly stipends that enables the organization carry out social services such as educational and motivational talks in schools, da’wah activities and medical camps among many other community services.

It was started by former students’ and Muslim union leaders in the local schools who were inspired by inter-school activities to give back to the society in their different fields of study.

Members are registered into different departments according to their field of study.
