Government extends Mandera curfew in bid to contain insecurity

The government has extended by another three months a dawn to dusk curfew that was imposed in several areas of Mandera County.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery issued the order in a gazette notice dated December 23, 2016.

“This order extends orders issued vide Legal Notice No. 183 of 2016 in respect of the said areas” read the notice in part.

The extension will take effect from December 28, 2016 to march 28, 2017 affecting Mandera town, Omar Jillo, Fino, Lafey, Kutulo, Elwak and their environs extending to 20km from the Kenya-Somalia border.

Mandera town has enjoyed relative calm during the period of curfew the past three months although Al Shabaab carried out several attacks outside the town mainly targeting communication masts.
