Garissa was selected host internet hotspot zone by the Ministry of Information among other special centers across the counties to enhance ease of access to government’s online services by the end of December this year.
Principal Secretary for broadcasting and telecommunications Sammy Itemize has announced on Monday that, the ministry has awarded the installation tender to Telkom Kenya and a US based Avante International Technology Company to install free Wi-Fi hot spots in all the 290 constituencies and it is set to complete the roll out of free Internet by end of December.
“The ministry has already awarded the tenders and we are now at the roll out stage and the project will be funded through constituency development fund (CDF),” said Itemize.
He said the Treasury has allocated about Sh300 million to be used in the development of infrastructure, where the Wi-Fi project will roll out on the national optic fiber backbone that will connect all the 47 counties.
The expected Wi-Fi technology installation will allow electronic devices to connect to all wireless networks using the low radio frequency bands.
