Five police officers killed in attack on Governor Roba’s convoy.

Wreckage of the police vehicle attacked in Mandera on Wednesday that left five police officers dead.

Mandera governor Ali Ibrahim Roba has survived an attack on his convoy which killed five security officers on Wednesday after their car over run in an IED blast.

The police officers were on the lead vehicles of Governor Roba’s convoy that was headed to Lafey for a political rally.

Among five officers killed included a personal bodyguard to the governor.

The Governor through his official Facebook informed the public that he is safe but, confirmed five security officers of his escort team killed.

“I would like to inform the general public that the other leaders and I are safe. Unfortunately, I lost five of my security officers including my personal bodyguard at an attack on my convoy between Arabia and Fino at around 1P.M. We shall give you more details once we are safely back to Mandera town InshaAllah. May their soul Rest in Peace,” reads the Facebook post.

The incident happened at Simo area between Fino and Arabia as the motorcade raced to their destination at around 1pm.

Locals said the police car was extremely damaged in the blast.

Lafey Sub-County is among those areas imposed on a dusk-dawn curfew due to terror attacks as terrorists penetrate the porous border to place explosives on the roads.

This is the second attack targeting security forces in the area within a spurn of a week two Kenya police reservist (KPR) were abducted and a senior chief killed in Omar Jillo location, Lafey Sub-County.

Earlier on, three administration officers were killed and two others injured along Liboi-Milan road, Garissa County.

The latest deadly explosion came after Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet warned that some members of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab had sneaked into the country and were planning attacks.

He said they are suspicious that the terrorists maybe planning to launch attacks similar to what happened in the UK on Tuesday killing 22 people and wounded over 100 people.

He said the security forces are pursuing those sneaked into the country through intelligent report and they have already identified Abdirizak Maalim Aweys who hails from El Ram location in Mandera County among the terror group.

According to the police, Aweys is behind the recent killing of four quarry workers.

He is also believed to be behind those planting IEDs along the roads in Elwak, Kotulo, Jabibar and shimbir Fatuma in Mandera South Sub-County

The IGP, however, said that police were on high alert, but asked the public to be vigilant and volunteer information to the security forces.
