Up to five people are nursing gun wounds at the Wajir County referral hospital after administration police officers escorting Simba Energy, an oil exploration company allegedly fired at them as they tried to stop the process.
The incident which happened at Sitawario in Wajir East Sub-County is the first bloody encounter for the dissenting residents of several areas in the county where oil exploration was to be done.
Angry residents demanded answers but no official explanation was given by the time of going to press.
Efforts to get more information from senior police officers on the ground were fruitless.
Early this year, residents of Wajir South blocked the same company citing fears of environmental degradation.
The standoff was later resolved peacefully after company managers met local community leaders and signed a compromise agreement where residents would get corporate social responsibly projects and other resources from the company.
Locals blame oil exploration exercise for the increasing climatic pattern changes in the areas where the exercise are done with some alleging dumping of toxic waste.
We cannot however independently verify these claims.
