Five people have been confirmed dead while five others are still unaccounted for after members of two neighboring clans fought at Shuru area along the border of Wajir and Marsabit counties.
According to North Eastern Kenya Regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh, the conflict was sparked by tussle over grazing lands but the administrator said a team of security personnel was dispatched to the area to contain the violence.
Several people caught in the crossfire sustained injuries and tension has remained high in Arbajahan Division of Wajir West District where some of the injuries were brought for treatment.
Reports indicate elders from the Gabra and Degodia communities have also started efforts to avoid more bloodshed.
Due to the prevailing harsh conditions in the region, there is increased movement of herders from one place to another in search of pasture and water sparking deadly clashes when rival clans feel encroachment on their ancestral lands.
