Crops destroyed, families displaced in Garissa as Tana River bursts its banks

Hundreds of families have been rendered homeless and crops worth millions of shillings washed away by floods after Tana River burst its banks.


Displaced families have sought refuge at local institutions such as Young Muslim school and .


Areas most affected include Windsor estate, Bulla Sheikh and Bulla punda which all border the mighty river.


No emergency response was on sight by the time of going to press although County officials said plans were underway to come to the rescue of the affected families.


Heavy rains have also cut off the main Garissa – Wajir highway with hundreds of travellers currently stranded along the road.


Speaking to Nep Journal on phone, a traveller who spent the last few days in Modogashe town after the local season river cut off the main road said there was imminent risk of outbreak of waterborne diseases in the area due to poor sanitation.


Abdi Mohamed said a truck was washed away by the raging waters.
