Residents of Elwak Town of Mandera County this morning woke up to submerged houses after the area realized heavy overnight downpours.

Reports indicate that several buildings collapsed and a class four pupil drowned in a submerged galley. Three other individuals sustained injuries and are being treated at Elwak hospital. Two minors and an elderly mother.

The natural water holes locally known as ‘gofo’ normally poses danger to the locals whenever it rains and it is not the first time they claim a life in similar circumstances.

Residents are also facing risks of water borne diseases and other health hazards after a flooding in the town saw dirty water find their way into the shallow wells which are the only source of water in the area.

The downpour comes at a time when the meteorological department has announced the county will soon welcome the dreaded El-nino rains.
