Garissa ‘haipatikani kwa sasa’ as fire razes down part of Safaricom’s main base station in the town

Garissa County firefighters battle a huge fire at Safaricom’s Garissa base station

Part of Safaricom’s base station in Garissa town was this afternoon razed to the ground after fire broke out in the station sending the giant communication services provider offline.

The cause of the inferno was not immediately established but engineers who spoke to Nepjournal on condition of anonymity pointed a finger at overheating of the equipment due to the biting temperatures.

Fire fighters from the county government of Garissa arrived at the scene immediately and managed to extinguish the fire. The station is located in the Post office compound.

Major services such as calls and M-Pesa have been disrupted following the destruction and service restoration may take days.
