Residents of Wajir were today treated to another political showdown after Ugas Sheikh Mohamed held a rally in the town where he declared that he will soldier on with his campaigns for the County’s gubernatorial seat, even after his clansmen overturned a decision to crown him as their preferred candidate.
The announcement means Ugas now finds himself on the receiving on end of his clansmen verdict which earlier favored him.
“We were selected by our community to vie for the positions of Governor and MP respectively, we are not party to any other declaration” said Ugas.
On Saturday, Sultan Najib Fai and Tarbaj MP Mohamed Elmi announced at a ceremony held at a Wajir hotel and attended by top community leaders and officials that the Fai community has reconsidered a verdict issued by the Sultanate on July 28, 2016 where Ugas was picked as their preferred gubernatorial candidate and Rashid Kassim as candidate for Wajir East parliamentary seat.
The elders unveiled Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Mohamud as their new gubernatorial candidate and announced Ugas was asked to contest for Wajir East parliamentary seat while Rashid Kassim was to give way.
Both leaders however held the rally held at Orahey grounds on Monday where they announced they were still in the race as per the July 28 verdict.
Ambassador Mohamed Abdi Mohamud finally got the community nod after proving popular with other clans living in Wajir and staged fierce campaigns that forced his clansmen to go back to the drawing boards.
He was however fined Kshs. 1.5m by the Sultanate for disobeying their orders.
Ugas will now face Mohamud, incumbent Ahmed Abdullahi, academician Salah Abdi Sheikh and Hashim Abdisirat Khalif with more candidates expected to join the race.
