At least 3 killed as deadly twin blasts rock Mogadishu

By NJ Correspondent:

At least three people were today killed and seven other seriously injured in two VBIED explosions targeting Amisom’s Halane base in Mogadishu.

According to a statement by the AMISOM, the two explosions targeted the camp’s Madina gate but the first explosion went off at a Somali National Security Forces manned checkpoint.

“The explosion destroyed the checkpoint and enabled the second VBIED to pass through towards Medina Gate. Our troops engaged the VBIED and it exploded about 200m from the gate.” Reads a statement by the AU mission.

Civilian buildings nearby and Aden Adde International airport’s VIP wing were damaged by the huge impact.

Guests at the nearby Peace Hotel that hosted the September 2016 IGAD heads of States meeting were evacuated after the attack.

Al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks.
