A man who was abducted by armed gunmen in Mombasa’s Old Town two days ago has been found dead. His lifeless body was discovered dumped by a roadside thicket at Mbungoni Village in Bombolulu on Monday morning.
Police recognized the deceased identity as Moiz Esmailjee Ebrahimjee aged 38. His body had a rope wrapped around the neck while Mr Ebrahimjee’s mouth was covered with a yellow polythene bag.
According to witnesses, his hands had also been tied to his back with another rope. “He had been wearing a kanzu. His body was found at around 6am by a commuter who raised alarm. Blood was coming out from the nose,” said the witness.
Kisauni police boss Christopher Rotich said the man appeared to have been strangled as the rope was still around his neck.
“We have information that he was kidnapped on Mombasa Island. We have launched a hunt for the killers for them to face the full wrath of the law,” said Mr Rotich. Police took his body to Coast General Hospital mortuary in Mombasa.
The deceased Mr Ebrahimjee, was kidnapped at gunpoint early Saturday morning as he walked to a mosque to pray. According to photos and information shared on Facebook by his friends, the deceased was kidnapped at gunpoint near Bohra Mosque in Old Town.
The matter was reported to Central Police station on Occurrence Book number 6/11/11/2017. Sources close to the family revealed that the kidnappers had called the family and demanded a Sh2 million ransom.
“The man works with a company that deals in transaction of big money and now the family is stressed up,” a certain source, that requested anonymity because he is not the family spokesman, told reporters on Sunday.
Mombasa criminal investigations chief Jacob Kanake on Monday said the family had sent Sh300,000 to the kidnappers out of the Sh2 million demanded. “We are going to investigate the M-Pesa transaction to help us get the kidnappers. They can run, but we will get them,” said Mr Kanake.
