Suspected Alshabab militia have shot dead two Technical University of Mombasa staff in Ukunda, Kwale County today. Information from a police officer and a witness who requested anonymity told news reporters at the scene that the attackers opened fire at vehicles ferrying students to the Technical University of Mombasa Kwale campus.

“The bus was carrying students from their hostels to the campus for lectures, it was being escorted by a staff van who were on board with two security police officers,’ the police officer said. That is when armed men amounting to 10 appeared from the bushes and started firing at the van in front. As a result, two staff women of the institution were killed right in the van. The driver and two security officers were injured. The casualties were rushed to hospital.

The witness who requested anonymity told reporters she together with several other students took to their heels leaving their vehicle behind when the gunmen struck them with bullets causing several other students covered in blood.

It was not clear who the gunmen were but it is said Alshaabab do frequently carry out attacks along the Kenya-Somali border and at the Coast. In 2015, the terrorist claimed the lives of 148 Garissa University college students. Meanwhile Coast regional boss Larry Kieng has assured residents of the area that they have already launched investigation into the matter and that the culprits purported to Al shaabab returnees from training in Somalia shall be brought to book.
