By NJ Correspondent:

At least four police officers and a civilian were killed after their armoured vehicle hit an IED in Baure area, Lamu County along Somalia border security officials said on Wednesday morning.

According to Lamu security officials the officers were of the Mangai Rapid Border Patrol Unit in C and were on their way to Mokowe town in Lamu West to refuel their vehicle when they ran over an IED blast at around 9a.m.

The incident occurred near Baure where Kenya military camp is based, Eastern part of the county.

Kenya Defense forces (KDF) sent for reinforcement were attacked while on their way to the scene but repulsed and reported to the scene.

The other two missing officers are suspected to be kidnapped by militants as they could not be found.

Security forces launched a multi-agency counter-terror operation in lamu’s coastal county in September 2015 following the influx of Al-Shabab militants into the Boni forest who planned attacks.

The country’s top security officials from the region are yet to comment on the incident.

Al-Shabaab militants have launched horrific incidents in Kenya since KDF invaded Somalia in October 2011 following kidnappings of aid workers and tourists.
